Aerodata flew this winter 14 spoil heaps in Nord-Pas de Calais (FR) with its thermal imaging system at the request of the French bureau of geological and mining research (BRGM).
World Heritage of UNESCO, the Bassin Minier reminds the story of an entire region. Many waste mine tips, which rise, recall the old activities and intense mining exploitation which took place there. Today all inactives these spoil heaps are still under surveillance.
The goal for BRGM was to identify particular hot points over the different waste mine tips. This heat is related to self combustion of residual coal that can, under certain conditions, driven instability on the slopes of the heap, without prior clues visibile to the naked eye. Only the thermal camera can provide the information necessary for securing the heaps. And we got the job done, once again !
